IT'S TIME FOR A RIDDLE CONTEST!!!

My students love competing so I decided to organise a class competition using riddles a few days ago. It worked out perfectly. Students were engaged, willing to talk in English and they had a lot of fun. I prepared 32 riddles that you can use in your lesson.

Here is a simple lesson plan for ESL teachers.

1. Tell your students that they are going to have a competition and they will have to solve some riddles.

2. Divide the class into a few groups (about 4 students in one group).

3. Each group needs a piece of paper to write the answers.

4. Explain the rules of the game.
The teacher reads a riddle aloud and students have about 45 seconds to give an answer.

***IMPORTANT: Students can discuss the riddle before giving the answer ONLY IN ENGLISH. If they talk in their native language their group loses one point.

If students answer correctly their team gets TWO points. If no team finds the answer to the riddle the teacher gives an extra tip. A team which answers correclty after hearing the extra tip gets ONE point. For example:

The riddle is:

I’m full of keys,
but I can’t open
any door.
What am I?

Nobody produces the correct answer so you try to help your students and give them some more information about it:

I am quite big and very heavy. You can play on me and listen to me.

Enjoy your lesson. I'm sure your students will love it!!!
